Best practices

Formulating statements

  • Statement should be unambiguous
  • Avoid double negatives
  • Avoid words “always”, “never” (too easy to reject)
  • Statement should be verifiable

Balance

  • Mix true and false statements
  • Don’t create patterns (e.g., T-F-T-F)
  • False statements should be plausible

Examples

Good examples

✅ “Water boils at 100°C at sea level.” → True
✅ “Whales are fish.” → False

Bad examples

❌ “Some birds cannot fly.” → Too obvious (True)
❌ “All mammals give birth to live young.” → Tricky (platypus lays eggs)
Avoid trick questions with exceptions - they frustrate participants.

Variations

Myth or Fact?

Instead of “True/False” you can use in content:
“MYTH or FACT: Shaving hair makes it grow back thicker.”

Agree / Disagree

“Statement: Remote work increases productivity.”

Participant view

Participant sees:
  1. Statement
  2. Two large buttons: TRUE / FALSE
  3. Timer
  4. Immediate feedback after answering

Statistics

True/False has 50% random success rate. Therefore:
  • Use in combination with other question types
  • Consider Accuracy mode (penalties for errors)
  • Or use as warm-up without high point weight
