Why use your own API key?
By default, you use the global AI token pool. Your own API key allows:
- No limits - use as much as you want (within your budget)
- Model choice - access to latest models
- Cost control - pay directly to provider

How to add your key
Get API key
Register with a provider (e.g., OpenAI) and generate an API key.
Open settings
Go to Settings → AI.
Select provider
Click on the provider whose key you want to add.
Paste key
Paste the API key into the text field.
Save
Click “Save”. Key will be encrypted.

Budget settings
You can set a monthly spending limit:
- Go to Settings → AI → Budget
- Enter maximum amount (in USD)
- System will stop generating after exceeding
Limit only works in Hey Quiz. Provider may charge more if you use the key elsewhere.
Key security
Your keys are secure:
- Encrypted in database
- Never displayed in full form
- Accessible only to you
Recommendations
- Use a dedicated key only for Hey Quiz
- Set spending limits with provider
- Regularly check usage
- Don’t share keys with anyone
Model selection
After adding a key, you can choose preferred model:
For OpenAI
- GPT-4o - newest, best
- GPT-4o-mini - faster, cheaper
- GPT-4-turbo - good balance
For Anthropic
- Claude 3.5 Sonnet - very good for text
- Claude 3 Opus - best, but more expensive
Removing a key
To remove a key:
- Settings → AI
- Click “Remove key” next to provider
- Confirm deletion
After removal, you’ll return to the global pool (with limits).
